The mission of the American Legion extends way beyond providing a support network for Veterans and their families. From the National Legion website, we read “The American Legion was chartered ... as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is...committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans. “ (emphases added) In other words, the American Legion exists to serve the community at-large as well as the veterans in the community.
